You can eat pizza with braces, but choose a soft crust, take small bites, and avoid hard or chewy pieces that could damage your brackets or wires.

Getting braces does not mean your child or teen has to stop eating pizza. A soft slice is fine. The main problem is not the pizza itself, but the crust, the toppings, or the way the pizza is eaten.

At Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in Scottsdale, we help children, teens, and adults learn how to care for their braces without making everyday life difficult.

Why Can Pizza Be a Problem With Braces?

Braces use small brackets and wires to guide the teeth into better positions over time.

These parts are strong, but hard or sticky foods can still cause damage.

A crunchy pizza crust can put too much pressure on a bracket. A thick and chewy crust can pull on the braces. Some toppings may also get stuck around the brackets, making cleaning harder.

The American Association of Orthodontists explains that hard, sticky, crunchy, and chewy foods can damage brackets and wires.

Children should avoid any pizza crust that feels difficult to chew.

A broken bracket or bent wire can cause discomfort. It may also affect your orthodontic treatment plan.

The safest choice is to eat pizza carefully and avoid the parts that feel too hard to chew.

10 Helpful Tips for Eating Pizza With Braces

Children and teens can still enjoy pizza during braces treatment. The key is to choose the right type of pizza and eat it carefully.

Child Wearing Braces Eating a Slice of Pizza

These simple tips can help protect the brackets and wires.

1- Choose a Soft Pizza Base

A soft pizza base is easier to chew and places less pressure on the braces. Fresh cheese pizza, soft pan pizza, and pizza with a thin but flexible base are good choices.

Avoid any slice that feels hard, dry, or difficult to bite. If the base has become crispy after sitting out for a long time, choose a softer slice.

2- Leave the Hard Crust on the Plate

The outer crust is the riskiest part of the pizza. If it feels hard, dry, or too chewy, it can put pressure on the braces and may loosen a bracket or move a wire.

Your child can leave the tough edges on the plate. Remove any crispy or burnt pieces before eating, and cut the softer crust into small bites.

3- Cut the Pizza Into Small Bites

Do not bite directly into a large pizza slice with the front teeth. This can place extra pressure on the brackets attached to those teeth.

Cut the pizza into small pieces with a knife and fork before your child starts eating. Small bites are easier to manage and place less strain on the brackets and wires.

4- Chew Slowly With the Back Teeth

The back teeth handle chewing better than the front teeth. Encourage your child to place small pieces of pizza toward the back of the mouth and chew slowly.

Eating too quickly makes it easier to accidentally bite down on a hard piece of crust. Slower eating also helps your child notice any food that feels uncomfortable.

5- Pick Simple and Soft Toppings

Cheese pizza is one of the easiest options for children with braces. Soft-cooked vegetables and small pieces of tender chicken may also work well.

Avoid tough meat, thick pieces of sausage, crunchy vegetables, and any topping that is difficult to chew. Remove a topping if your child has to pull or tug at it with the teeth.

6- Be Extra Careful After a Braces Adjustment

Teeth may feel sore for a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted. Even soft pizza can feel uncomfortable during this time.

Wait until the soreness improves before eating pizza. When your child feels ready, start with a soft slice cut into very small pieces. If chewing still hurts, choose an easier meal such as pasta, soup, yogurt, or mashed potatoes.

7- Check the Braces After Eating

Food can hide around brackets and wires. Ask your child to look in the mirror after eating pizza.

Check for trapped cheese, crust pieces, or toppings caught near the brackets. Also, check whether any brackets feel loose or whether a wire feels different from usual.

8- Rinse the Mouth With Water

Pizza sauce, cheese, and small food particles can remain around the braces. Rinsing with water after the meal helps remove loose food particles.

Water is also a better choice than soda or sweet drinks. Sugary drinks can increase the risk of plaque buildup and cavities when braces make the teeth harder to clean.

The NHS recommends limiting sugary foods and fizzy drinks during orthodontic treatment to help lower the risk of tooth decay.

9- Brush Carefully Around Each Bracket

Ask your child to brush after eating pizza whenever possible. Clean gently around each bracket, along the gumline, and between the teeth.

Cleveland Clinic explains that plaque can collect around brackets and wires, which may lead to cavities and irritated gums. If your child cannot brush right away, rinsing with water can help remove loose food until they get home.

Regular cleaning also helps reduce bad breath and white marks on the teeth.

10- Stop Eating if Something Feels Wrong

Your child should stop eating if a bracket becomes loose, a wire starts poking the cheek, or chewing causes sharp pain.

Do not try to fix a damaged bracket or wire at home.

Contact your orthodontic office so the team can explain the next step and decide whether your child needs a braces checkup.

Can You Eat Pizza Right After Getting Braces?

Your teeth may feel sore for a few days after braces are placed or adjusted. During this time, even soft pizza may feel uncomfortable to chew.

Choose softer foods until the soreness improves. Soup, yogurt, pasta, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs may feel better during the first few days.

When your teeth feel more comfortable, you can try soft pizza cut into small pieces. Eat slowly and stop if chewing causes pain.

How Should You Clean Your Braces After Eating Pizza?

Pizza can leave cheese, sauce, and small food pieces around the brackets. Good brushing is important because trapped food can lead to plaque buildup, bad breath, cavities, and gum irritation.

Brush your teeth after eating when possible. Clean gently around every bracket and along the gumline. Pay close attention to the spaces between the teeth and wires.

If you cannot brush right away, rinse your mouth with water. This can help remove loose food until you can brush properly.

Your orthodontic team can also show your child the right way to clean around braces.

What Should You Do if a Bracket Breaks While Eating?

Check the braces if something feels loose or uncomfortable after eating. A broken bracket may move along the wire. A bent wire may poke the cheek or gum.

Do not try to fix the braces at home. Contact your orthodontic office and explain what happened. Your orthodontist can tell you whether your child needs an appointment.

Your child should avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods until the braces are checked.

The dental care tips for kids can also help parents build better brushing and flossing habits at home.

Can Kids Still Enjoy Their Favorite Foods With Braces?

Yes. Children and teens can still enjoy many of their favorite foods during orthodontic treatment. They may simply need to prepare some foods differently.

For pizza, choose a soft slice, remove the hard edges, cut it into small pieces, and brush it with sauce after eating.

These small habits can protect the braces while allowing your child to enjoy a normal meal with family and friends.
