What is a Tongue Tie?

A tongue tie is a condition in which tongue movement is limited due to the thick and tight deformed lingual frenulum, known as ankyloglossia or tongue tie. The lingual frenulum is a small tissue band that connects the tongue’s underside to the mouth’s floor.

The lingual frenulum often contracts in the unborn child in their mother’s womb during growth. Up to 10% of the infants are born with ankyloglossia.

When someone has a tongue tie, it makes daily routine activities such as speaking, swallowing, and feeding challenging.

Types of Tongue Tie

Two significant types of ankyloglossia make the treatment easy or hard. Although tongue tie issues can be mild, moderate, or severe, their types include:

  • Posterior: Its location is the mouth’s rear, making it harder to identify.
  • Anterior: Easily visible near the front of the mouth or tongue.

Warning Signs and Symptoms:

The first sign of tongue tie in babies is difficulty latching, followed by fussy behavior and irritability. Moreover, they face colic and show slow weight gain, which makes it alarming for the patients.

Some of the common signs and symptoms of tongue tie in infants include the following:

  • Making clicking sounds while breastfeeding
  • Fussy reactions during feeding
  • Smaller than average tongue size
  • Difficulty in moving the tongue
  • Swelling in the neck region
  • No weight gain
  • Disturbed sleep patterns

Younger kids may show the following signs:

  • Speech problems
  • Difficulty in swallowing food
  • Trouble blowing bubbles
  • Trouble smiling and laughing
  • Dental issues
  • Difficulty in blowing candles
  • Disturbed sleep

In adults, the signs include severe headache, neck and shoulder pain, sleep apnea, and tension.

Mouth breathing, tongue slipping down the throat, and occluding airways during sleep are significant signs.
